Jesus asked each disciple what they want from Him after He is gone back to heaven, and 9 say they want to speedily come to him after their ministry on earth (v1-2). Christ blesses them that when they are 72 years old they will rest with him in their kingdom and turns to the 3 that did not answer before to ask what they wanted from Him (v3-4). After hearing that the 9 are blessed because of their desires, they were sorrowful because they wanted something else, but Jesus knows their thoughts and tells them how much more blessed they are for wanting to stay and preach to the people on earth until the second coming (v5-7). They will never taste death nor the pains of the flesh but will live forever and be changed into immortal beings when Christ comes, and only feel sorrow for the sins of the world and joy for the kingdom of the Father (v8-11).
Christ touched the 9 then departed and the 3 Nephites had the heavens open to them to witness many unspeakable things that they cannot utter and could have possibly transfigured them into an immortal state so they could stay on the earth (v12-17). They went to preach among the people of the land and as far as Mormon knows they were cast into prisons by non church members, pits, furnaces, and dens with wild beasts but still continued to preach and set up the church of Christ because of their protection and power (v18-23). We are not allowed to know their names but Mormon knew they personally and knows that they are among us even in today's time preaching, ministering, and serving until the Lord seeth fit to have them minister to all the scattered tribes of Israel (v24-29).
I am for sure excited to hear about all of their marvelous works when the second coming comes and the truth is spread about how they were the hands of God on earth working miracles among the people because I have faith in the words of Christ and know that they are here (v30-33). On a darker note, there are people who have chosen not to receive the words of Christ, and it would have been better if they were not born because they will have to face the justice of an offended God who hath been trampled under the feet of men (v34-35). Mormon inquired of the Lord about the 3 Nephites and was told that they were in fact changed so that they would not suffer pains or temptations of the body but only for the sins of the worlds, but their full change will happen when Christ comes again and they can be received into the kingdom of the Father (v36-40).
