The Nephites are chased and gather in Cumorah for a final battle against the Lamanites, but they are destroyed and hundreds of thousands are slain by the sword. Mormon hides the sacred records in the hill Cumorah before the battle and gives some to his son, Moroni to protect.
Mormon knows that the people of Nephi will be destroyed and wants to finish his record before then so he writes to the king of the Lamanites to let the people gather in Cumorah to prepare for a last battle which is allowed and all the Nephites gathered there (v1-4). This was the year 384 and Mormon's hope was to have an advantage during the battle but because he was getting old and knew it would be the last struggle of his people, he hid the majority of the sacred records in the hill Cumorah and gave a few to his son, Moroni (v5-6). There were whole families of the Nephites filled with the fear of the wicked while the Lamanites came upon them and hewn down the men and people with great slaughter save it were 24 people including Mormon and Moroni (v7-11).
These 24 were left to look upon the slain that added up to be about 330,000 of the army (it says that each commander led 10,000 so I just added up all the leaders that were listed) not even mentioning the wives and children, granted some might have escaped and joined the Lamanites, but still (v12-15). Mormon grieves for the people by crying out in despair, "O ye fair ones..." how could you have let this happen, how could you have fallen so far and not repented (v17-19)? All my sorrow cannot bring your return but you will soon stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be judged according to your works (20-21). This didn't have to happen if only you would have repented, being destroyed was the justice of the Father and I only hope that his mercy will be upon you (v22).
Now that's not exactly what he said but that is how I interpret it to make it real to myself and learn from the experience.
