So the group had built 8 boats and the brother of Jared had been asked of the Lord how he would like the barges without fire or windows to while he came up with lighted stones that were molten out of rock to be transparent (v1). When he goes to pray to the Lord, it is in extreme humility and gratitude for His mercy as he asks the Lord to touch the rocks he has prepared (not just picked up, but altered and worked on), and with the touch the power of God will cause them to shine forth to be used in each vessel (v2-5). The brothers faith was so pure that he was able to see the Lord's hand as it came down to touch the stones and was struck with fear because it appeared to be a finger of a man (v6).
The Lord sees and asks why he fell on the ground to while he answered, 'I saw your hand and was scared because I didn't know you were flesh and blood (v7-8). I would say that the Lord is somewhat surprised that he was able to see him because no other man has been able to witness Him in this state, so the brother of Jared has more faith than any before him (v9-10). The Lord then asks if he would believe the words which would be spoken to him and the brother of Jared said in full confidence that he would because he knows the Lord cannot lie (v11-12).
So the Lord showed himself to him and told him many truths starting with a simple fact that he will be redeemed from the fall because of his faith and through the sacrifice of Himself, Jesus Christ, which is part of the plan of redemption (v13-14). There have been other instances when the Lord spoke or showed himself to prophets but not in this way that He has talked with the brother of Jared, and He teaches that the spirit looks like a body just as His in this moment looks like the one that will appear to His people and the Nephites (v15-18). Moroni doesn't give a full account but testifies that these words are true and they happened to the brother of Jared because of the faith and perfect knowledge which he had of Christ (v19-20).
The Lord instructed the brother of Jared to record what had happened and bring the record to the Lord to seal up because none should know about it until the coming of Christ in the flesh (v21-22). When the time comes, the Lord will provide an interpreter that will use the two stones sealed with the records to translate them from the language that will one day be extinct (v23-24). After they were done speaking and giving instructions, the Lord showed him all the inhabitants of the earth past, present, and future because he had such great faith as to be shown such marvelous things and record them for the Lord's purposes (v25-28).
