Mormon Ch5

Once again, Mormon takes up leadership of the Nephites armies again but it doesn't stop the blood and carnage. There are prophecies of the future about the Book of Mormon coming forth and also that the Lamanites will become a filthy and loathsome people but eventually will receive the gospel again.
Mormon realizes that his oath to never lead the Nephites again was a mistake so he repents and is looked upon by the people as someone who will deliver them, but he doesn't have hope in such things because he knows the judgements of God are coming for them (v1-2). The battle start as the Lamanites try to take cities that will allow them access to the rest of the country, but the Nephites had strongholds that prevented that even though they could not stop some destruction in villages that were not gathered in (v3-5). In the 380th year, a great number of Lamanites did attack the Nephites and drove them out and killed any who were not fast enough to escape their swords (v6-7).
All of the blood and carnage is not pleasing to Mormon and he only shares the knowledge because he knows that it will one day come to the remnant of the people by the hand of the Gentiles in the latter days to teach them to realize where all blessings come from (v8-10). I sorrow along with others about the calamity of the house of Israel but I know that the Lord has preserved the writings of that time to be brought in my time to convince all that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and has suffered to bring to pass His great and eternal purpose (v11-14). Even though the Lamanites will become dark, filthy, and loathsome, they will have a second chance when the gospel is restored on the earth to be a delightsome people once more and forsake the ways of Satan (v15-18).
The Lord is a merciful God who listens to prayers to reserves the blessings of the people for the generations that will repent and turn to Him after being humbled and scattered by the Gentiles in the last days (v19-21). To the Gentiles, you are in the hands of God and you will be in the grasp of His justice if you do not repent and turn from your evil ways (v22-24). Mormon's words to the Gentiles always strike me because I feel he is talking straight to me and telling me to turn from the ways of the world towards Christ and His wonderful mercy. I love the scriptures and the warnings that it gives against temptation, sin, and all of Satan's awfully cunning ways.
