In v3 we see that Lehi has his own account of the event and Nephi wants to focus in writing the things of God on his small plates. His purpose is to "persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham...and be saved" (v4).
Nephi already knows there is a huge difference between the things of the world and the things that are pleasing to God. (V5)
Although he doesn't have a family, he is thinking of how his record will be passed to his seed and they will be commanded to write things of worth that will help the children of men (v6). I consider Nephi's words to be of great importance because he wrote them wanting them to influence the lives of those who read them for the better.
