Lehi is told of the importance of the plates of brass in Laban's possession and commanded to seek them (v2-4). We see more murmuring from Lam and Lem (nicknames!) because it's going to be hard. They are three days away...and I wonder why they didn't refuse and let Nephi go alone. But I guess it wouldn't have been such a great story and lesson if he did go alone.
Scripture mastery v3: go and do as The Lord commands because he has insured our success in accomplishing them.
The boys first attempt was to ask politely (v11-13) which didn't work. In v19 Nephi says while convincing his bros not to give up, "it is wisdom in God that we should obtain these records, that we may preserve unto our children the language of our fathers." We can apply this to our day with both the Book of Mormon and bible. We may think of the scriptures as having weird language but it is their language :) heritage is great!
The second attempt, they tried to bribe Laban to give up the records (v23-26) but he stole it from them! Laman has a little of a temper tantrum and starts to be physically aggressive (v28). An angel comes to break up the fight and chastise Laman and Lemual for being bullies (v29). They don't learn their lesson because the murmur but at least the physical violence stopped (v31).
