When most of the preaching had been done among the Nephites, the sons of Mosiah asked to go and preach to the Lamanites (v1). They wanted to cure them of their hatred towards the Nephites and stop all the fighting, as well as give then the good news of salvation (v2-3). These guys were once of the vilest of sinners, but they now have the deep desire to spread the truth to everyone (v4). Mosiah took The Lord's council to let them go on this mission vecause they are going to have success and be protected (v5-8).
Since all of his sons left for this mission or refused the crown, Mosiah is left with one hares to his kingdom (v9-10). There is a little side bar about how he translated the plates from Limhi is described in v11-19. He was gathering all the records in his possession which included those and the two stones he had used to translate them (v11-13). All these records have been preserved by the hand of The Lord with the intent to educate about the people who wrote them (v14-17).
Even though learning about the end fate (you'll learn too if you read Ether) brings sadness, great knowledge can be gained from learning the lessons it teaches (v18). Ignore v19 because it isn't written now, it's actually way in Ether. After having this reminiscing while gathering all the records, Mosiah bestows them upon Alma the younger, knowing he has become a good person and will preserve them (v20).
