This chapter shows the importance of the rising generation, they need strong testimonies and be given the means to understand. Those that were young didn't understand the traditions of their fathers because they were just children when King Benjamin gave his final speech (v1). These kids didn't even believe in the resurrection and Christ! It hardened their hearts and they became like a separate people from the church (v2-4). They started small but grew in numbers because of their flattering away church members (v5-6).
Those who sinned would be brought before the priests and Alma, who didn't know what to do about it all at first (v7-9). This was new to him so he went to King Mosiah to judge them, but he could not because he was not the spiritual leader (v10-12). Being troubled, Alma went to The Lord with the problem and The Lord spoke to him and comforted him (v13-15). Alma had such great faith he was blessed for his many acts of faith spoken in v16-19.
Alma is promised eternal life for the his faith and told that any other who receives The Lord's words will also have eternal life (v20-22). Those that have sinned need only to repent and believe in Christ to be forgiven (v23-24). Those who endure and are clean will stand with God and be redeemed. Those who do not seek forgiveness will depart from The Lord's presence into everlasting fire with the devil (v25-28).
Alma is told to spead that message to all who have sinned and encourage them to repent because they will be forgiven when they do (v29-30). People are to forgive one another but any who don't repent will no longer be in the church (v31-32). Alma wrote the message down and then went to judge the people according to those commandments (v33-34). People were given the chance to repent. Just as The Lord said, the ones who did not repent were blotted out of the church (v35-36).
Alma continued to regulate the church and they had peace while they were diligent in following the word of God (v37-38). Everyone was warned against sin and taught to pray continually in thanks to God (v39).
